Week 6 - Barker 12

I liked what Barker had to say about city being like a text. Certainly the city should be understood as not just one city but a group of cities. Different subcultures coming together to make up a greater identity that is LA, New York or Chicago. As Barker points out, perhaps the boundary for how we come to understand city is breaking down in respect to the internet. The internet has created the sense of a Global village even if this is not material reality. Perhaps this has a liberating and uniting effect for how we see others around the world. Here in LA we can see impact of the "concrete jungle" mentality and how it has enhanced our sense of the LA fortress. Urban sprawl and the need to distinguish neighborhoods and people groups for security reasons has an unsettling effect.
